What A Character!

Are you a people watcher?

A people watcher watches people.  A people watcher observes mannerisms, including the way others walk, carry on conversations, and how they perform the millions of different actions involved with getting through life.

A good writer is a people watcher, but with a catch:  A good writer remembers what he/she observes, and uses those observations in character development in stories.

Do you know someone with an unconscious nervous habit of using phrases like “you know” in their conversation?  Use it!

Know someone that is dealing badly with personal tragedies?  Save that knowledge, and, later, have your character deal badly with a personal tragedy.

Do you know someone with strong political leanings?  Save that, and create a character that takes those leanings to the extreme.

Truth is, everyone you know, and everyone you meet, has the potential to lend their characteristics to your writing.  As a writer and an observer, you have the ability to use the things that make people individuals.  You have the creative license to exaggerate or downplay those characteristics, but all of those things come from observing the many different people in your life.

So, go to a public place, like a shopping center, or a park.  Watch people.  Listen to people.  And, by all means, remember what you see and hear...and use what you observe to create different, realistic characters in your writing.

Heaven Help Me

I told you.

I said that I would be right back at it by this evening, even though I wanted to take a break.

So, for a break, I started creating the title page for MacArthur Park.  It’s another Justice Security short story, but a bit different than the others.

Well, once the title page was done, the CD I was listening to started playing “Jim Dandy”.  That started working in the back of my mind…while I started writing the MacArthur Park story.

I got to a stopping point on MacArthur Park.  And I stopped.

I had always planned to write a novel about Justice Security’s competitor…whose name is, of course, Jim Dandy.  The novel is intended to have Jim Dandy turning to Joey Justice for help with a situation.

And the time was right.  I have now started Jim Dandy – A Justice Security Novel.

Please say a little prayer for me…there aren’t enough hours in the day!

So much for a break.  I told you.  It isn’t something I can help!

I'm Beat!

I’m beat.

Since I finished Don’t Come Around Here No More – A Tale Of Sardis County, I have been mostly vegging out.  I’ve written five stories non-stop since the end of August, and my mind has turned to mush, sort of.

I have two novels going right now that I need to work on:  Junior’s Farm and Hell’s Bells.  I also have some short stories that I need to be working on, too:  MacArthur Park, Eli’s Coming, Eve Of Destruction, The Show Must Go On, Imaginary Lover, and I’m Your Boogie Man, just to name a few.  Of course, every story that I write has the potential to turn into something bigger, but they always start out as short stories.

But, I really need a breather.  Just a short one.  A couple of days.  Really.

Then I’ll get back to the old grind.  I promise.

The funny part of this?  I say that I need a breather, but where will I be later on?  Right here, in front of the computer screen, typing a few words on one story or another.

I don’t have a choice.

Because the stories have gotta come out, or they’ll rattle around inside my head until they drive me crazy.  Crazier, I should say.

I hope it’s the same with you, and your writing.  May the ideas drive you insane until you banish them to paper, or hard drive, or cloud…it's the only way to create!

Patience, Patience, Patience

Patience, patience, patience.

I have to keep saying that to myself.

I have 4 stories out right now, awaiting acceptance or rejection.  They are:  Gold, Hot Child In The City, Saturday In The Park – A Justice Security Short Story, and Don’t Come Around Here No More – A Tale Of Sardis County.

The wait is horrible!  Some of these take months before I hear anything.  That is hard, knowing that I have completed stories in the pipeline, just waiting for YOU to read them.  But, I have to be patient.

Patience, patience, patience.

Easy to say, soooo hard to do…

I am still waiting to hear your opening line.  My thanks to Ray Pruett for contributing his opening line yesterday.  It was “I woke up choking on vomit.”  Hmmm…Ray says it’s a zombie novel.  Sounds good!

Notice Ray’s sentence:  Short, straight to the point, and written in the first person.  “I” did this, “I” did that.  I haven’t been comfortable enough with my own writing to try a first person story yet, although it does have its uses.  I usually have so much going on in a story, and so much flipping back and forth from scene to scene, that I can’t see writing a Justice Security novel in the first person.  I do like Ray’s opening sentence, however.  The story should be interesting!

How have you started YOUR story?  First person?  Third person?  Tell us all in a comment below!

I can only say what I always say:

Pick up a book, and…

What Have You Done?

What have YOU done to further your writing lately?

Have you typed a sentence?  A paragraph?  A page?

Remember, I told you that it starts with only a sentence…then, another…and another…and pretty soon you have a paragraph!  Then, another paragraph, and another…then, you have a story!

You can comment on this blog, by the way…and I’d like you to!  I’d like your comment to show your first sentence.  No titles, no stories…only the first sentence you’ve typed.  Let’s see it!

The longest journey begins with one step, says an ancient Chinese proverb.

Show us all your one step!
